Where Can You Put a Skip?

Before your skip arrives, you need to decide exactly where it is going to go. Getting the placement right saves time, avoids permit complications and makes loading much easier. Here is everything you need to know about where you can and cannot put a skip in Hitchin and North Hertfordshire.

On Your Driveway

Placing a skip on your own driveway is the most popular and straightforward option. No permit is required, there are no council time limits, and you can load it at your own pace throughout your hire period. Most driveways in Hitchin have enough space for at least a mini or midi skip.

Things to consider with driveway placement:

• Surface protection — skips are heavy and can crack or mark block paving or tarmac. Ask us about placing boards underneath to protect your surface.
• Access — make sure the skip can be delivered and collected without obstruction. Our drivers need to be able to get a lorry close enough to drop and lift the skip safely.
• Neighbours — if the skip is close to your boundary, it is worth letting your neighbours know, particularly if loading will be noisy or create dust.

What About Front Gardens?

If you have a front garden with vehicle access, this counts as private land and no permit is required. The skip simply needs to fit within your boundary and be accessible for delivery and collection.

Can a Skip Go on a Grass Verge?

Grass verges are usually publicly owned, which means a permit is required. They are also not ideal for skip placement as the ground can be soft and the skip may sink or cause damage. We generally recommend driveway or road placement over verges.
